The Local paper

August 19th, 2008

As part of my "advertising" my Website I submit comments to health stories in my local Evening paper. After one such comment I received this email dated 19th June 2008

Hi Alyn, Thank you for your comments which you left for our web site. Could you email me your number or call me on the details below. I would be interested in talking to you about running a possible story on your case. All the best xxxxxxxxxxxxx (name censored)Reporter
South Wales Evening Post - Wales' biggest selling newspaper

SO I emailed my details and waited and waited and waited. So I emailed this reporter again saying ;

I have to sadly assume, from your silence, that you suddenly are no longer interested in running that possible story. I was interested in this story (link no longer available but it was about the mother of a suicide victim in Bridgend saying she could not get help from the Mental health services in West Glamorgan.) as the very same body, or at least the Medical Director thereof in 1998 had ME sectioned and the man MADE up I was a high risk suicide. Incidentally I now have 3 diagnoses that I have NO mental illness and PROBABLY never had. BUT I am now referred to Tonna Mental Services, Neath, appt in August, taking up a place that the lady in the above story should have, not me. I trust however that I will get a mention in the Obituary column when that time becomes necessary.

A bit of a cheeky ending I know. BUT then I received this reply dated 1st July 2008

Hi Alyn, sorry I've been away on holidays but sadly I am now back in work. Will clear the decks and give you call in the week all the best xxxxxxxxxxxxx (name censored) Reporter
South Wales Evening Post - Wales' biggest selling newspaper

I replied “sorry to appeared so angry but life has been hard.I remember the feelings after a holiday and you put it succinctly LOL”

AND that was that. BUT at least I got a response which is better than that I have received from my MP, Assembly Member etc etc........ so far I have to say.

Mama Mia!

August 19th, 2008

I just saw Mama Mia: The Movie for the second time. I love love love it! I just want to dance through the whole thing! I plan to buy it on DVD and do exactly that, dance and sing. I'm sure it'll cheer me up or relieve stress.

I had a horrible day at work. I don't want to re-live it by writing about it. Too much stress occurred in too short of time. I also officially hate the phone after today. It would have been not so bad if I could have understood the person I was talking to on the phone. But alas she has a really thick accent, talks too fast, and I was on the noisy bus so therefore hearing on the phone was next to impossible. Let's  just say I'm so very thankful I'm done this job in 8 more work days.... School can't get here fast enough! (Yes I know I'll be taking those words back when I'm knee deep in papers and midterms.)

My audiologist appointment has been moved up to Thursday. She didn't realize she booked me on a holiday until the next day. She phoned me back and offered me an earlier appointment. I don't know if that is good or bad. I am thankful I'll just get it over with though....

I've been asking more questions/looking into grad school stuff again. It makes my head hurt but its exciting at the same time.

I'm volunteering at my city's first "Walk Now for Autism" in September. I'm not sure what I'll be doing, I offered to do anything, (except be a mascot as I think they are scary so why would I ever get dressed up as something that scares me, which is why you will never see me dressed as a clown. BEGIN RANT: I hate clowns. With a passion. We had Ronald McDonald come to our school to teach the kids about health living, yes ironic beyond belief, and he kept running past me and I would literally shudder every time. There is something so wrong about clowns. END RANT) I'm looking forward to the day. I forgot how much I enjoy doing volunteer work. I did a lot in high school, I had so many unique experiences and met a lot of people, I'm looking forward to getting back into doing more. I am so horrible at asking people for money so I have always avoided fundraising walks, however I figure if I volunteer for the walk I'm still helping out in a way I feel I can do so.

I've been reading a lot of blogs about CI's (Cochlear Implants) lately. They are pretty interesting, especially to me as it relates to my future career! I'll have to update my Blogroll soon.

I want a new camera. Mine pretty much died. It only works half the time, if that. It did take a ridiculous amount of pictures in the last year, at least over 10'000, so it was due to die at some point. However, I don't have the money for one, I'm holding out hope for my birthday (late October) for a new camera or at least some money towards one!

I think that is enough of my random babble to fulfill my very few readers. I have attempted a new post for the last few days and just never had the energy to get started. Once I get started though, I have a hard time stopping!

Children as Big Pharma Guinea Pigs: 98 Percent of Drug Trials on Children Have no Safety Checks

David Gutierrez | August 19, 2008

Fewer than 2 percent of drug trials conducted on children have independent safety advisory boards, a review published in the journal Acta Paediatrica has found.Researchers from Nottingham University reviewed reports on 739 international drug trials that had been published between 1996 and 2002. They found that although 74 percent of studies described their safety monitoring procedures, less than 2 percent included an independent safety review committee.

Such committees are composed of independent health experts who can review the study data as it comes out and warn if the drug appears to be placing study participants at risk.

The Girl Effect - How can you use this concept to build your brand?

August 19th, 2008

Is The Girl Effect the real Butterfly Effect in action?  Does a flap of a butterfly's wings create a hurricane half way around the world?  Does everything that you do in life have such amazing effects on you, those around you and the world we live in?

I believe it does and I believe that a video like this is so very important not only for the concept that they are creating and pushing, but in fact to how we should all live our lives.

I was once told that the world is full circle.  The boomerang effect does happen.  When you do something and send it out into the universe, it comes back.  Good or bad, simple or complex, loving and hateful.  It all comes back to you, it all is full circle, we are all one.

We are all affected by each others actions on levels that we may never know.  Amazingly, this video is the catalyst that is bringing it to the surface.  Please check out the video and check out their site....The Girl Effect Dot Org.

3 Days Before Step 1

August 19th, 2008

Soooo close. I must say I couldn't be more prepared if I tried. I am ridiculous. I have an entire file of everything I have accumulated from doctors, friends, websites, etc. on the surgery to bring with me. If anything goes awry, I put my trust in the good doctors and nurses of the University of Chicago to level me out. Of course, staying in a hospital whose motto declares, "At the forefront of medicine" kind of eases the tension a tad, don't you agree?

I had the pleasure of meeting a fellow j-poucher and his significant other this weekend over lunch to discuss our experiences. Sean (my boyfriend) accompanied me, as I felt it was just as important for him as it was for me. Not only was it a tremendous relief to meet young adults our age who knew EXACTLY the same woes and hardships, but to see them so happy and perfectly delightful people to spend time with was a pure joy. They fought through a difficult journey, and they arrived at the end stronger and happier than ever.  It only boosted my confidence; although this will not be simple or easy, it's going to be much better afterwards.  I think my dear friend Julia said it best during our phone conversation this afternoon , "You're taking a risk, just like with anything. A job, or school. That's what you do in life. You're taking that risk to make your life better."

So tonight my family and I enjoyed my favorite meal (Dad's homemade chicken parmesan). My liquid diet starts tomorrow. Thursday morning, my mother is taking me to get a massage and a haircut. She says it'll soothe my nerves. Thursday afternoon, I begin the Fleet phospho soda and my final night (hopefully) in the bathroom. 6 a.m. I report to the pre-op room to meet the anethesiologist. Surgery is at 7:30 a.m. I've made plans to bring a notebook and camera with me to document what's going on. Once I get home and I'm feeling less like a slug, I'll put it all up here. I'm as ready as I'll ever be. Let's do this!

Analysis of the Effects of Global Change on Human Health and Welfare and Human Systems

Analysis of the Effects of Global Change on Human Health and Welfare and Human Systems

 http://cfpub.epa.gov/ncea/cfm/recordisplay.cfm?deid=175644

Projected environmental changes such as increased heatwaves, increased rainfall, droughts, global warming, reduced air quality, and increased precipitation will greatly affect human welfare and health in the future.  Climate conditions are a key element to perceived quality of life, and can affect human well being directly (i.e. extreme weather events) as well as indirectly (i.e. spreading of food borne disease). It is predicted that by 2050 the US population that will be 65 years or older will be 86 million or 21% of the total population.  This group, along with small children and the poor, will be highly vulnerable to the climate changes and will feel the affects greatly.

One aspect of climate change is increased heat waves; consequently, heat related deaths are expected to increase in the coming decades.  Eleven of the last twelve years have ranked the hottest in the record of global surface temperatures since 1850.  In the past 50 years, there has been a steady increase of record extreme temperatures and heatwaves.  The West and Southwest have felt the greatest effects of increased temperatures.  Those 65 or older have the highest heatwave death rates.  One study looked at 44 US cities in the summer and winter to analyze the effects of extreme weather conditions.    They looked at the years 2020 and 2050 under a no-control scenario; in 2020 the increase in heat related deaths was from 1,840 up to a range between 1,981-4,100.  In 2050 the excess summer deaths were between 3,190-4,748.

The ocean temperatures absorb 80% of the heat, which have increased temperatures to depths of 3000 m.  With increased temperatures, the ocean water levels are increasing annually.  In fact, in just the past century the level has increased 5-8 inches.  It is predicted that by 2100 the temperature will increase by 1.1 to 6.4 degrees C, and the level is estimated to increase anywhere from 7-23 inches.

There is also a recent trend of increased perception in some parts of the US.  In the Pacific NW and California, the increase in summer time rainfall has increased 20% to 80%.  El Nino events are associated with the increase of precipitation.  Another explanation for the increase in precipitation is the rising temperatures which turn snowfall into rainfall.  The snow pack is melting faster and earlier, which in some parts has been up to 4 weeks sooner than normal.

Due to these current and furture consistent climate changes, illnesses and diseases will likely increase and affect human health.  A recent trend is the increase of the transmissions of blood-feeding insects or tick species, as well as rodent species.  Due to ecosystem changes and warmer temperatures, there has been an increase of Lyme disease, ehrlichioses, and West Nile Virus which is expanding the range of people who are affected.  Waterborne and food-borne diseases are also on the rise.  In 2002 there were 1,300 outbreaks due to food-related diseases.  Climate changes that have provided conditions for growth and survival for bacterial which has lead to an increase in outbreaks.

Another cause is increased storm events and flooding which contaminates crops from near by livestock.  There is also a direct link between salmonella  and increased temperatures.  Yearly peaks in salmonella cases occurred within 1-6 weeks of the highest temperatures.

Other diseases that are on the rise due to warmer temperatures include: Leptospirosis (which is the most widespread zoonotic disease in the world), Vibrio (shellfish-related illnesses), cryptosporidium and giardia (waterborne illnesses), and Naegleria fowleri (free-living amboeboflagellate found in lakes at warm temperatures).  There are also epidemics of food and water exposure viruses such as enteroviruses, rotaviruses, hepatitis A, and nororvirus.  These viruses account for 67% of food-borne illnesses.  Between 1948 and 1994, 51% of waterborne illnesses occurred after a 90th percentile precipitation event and 68% after an 80th percentile event.  It has also been noted that there is a direct correlation between major rainfall and waterborne diseases.

In seasons of strong precipitation, often resulting in flooding, there have been studies that show that this helps determine the severity of the influenza season in regards to length and intensity.  Another illness that is greatly affected by the climate is valley fever, which is caused by the inhalation of spores of a fungus that thrives during wet periods after a drought has occurred.

Poor air quality is exaggerated when ground level ozone is formed because of air pollutants and increased temperatures.  This causes millions of Americans to live in areas that are below the air quality standards.  There is a direct correlation between poor air quality and short and long term health effects such as: coughing and breathing problems, lung disease, asthma, chronic bronchitis, heart attack, and arrhythmias.  When high levels of CO2 are present, the mortality increases by 1.1% per degree temperature increase over the baseline rate.

Alco-pop tax ‘completely fails’ in Darwin

August 19th, 2008

The Distilled Spirits Industry Council says the Federal Government's "alco-pop" tax trial has completely failed to reduce binge drinking in Darwin.

The council surveyed 15 local bottle shop owners and were told that 80 per cent of pre-mixed drink consumers have just switched to other types of alcohol.

The council's information and research manager, Stephen Riden, says the survey is proof that higher taxes are not the solution for the nation's binge drinking problems.

He says more effort needs to be directed towards changing drinking habits in the home.

"Children absorb parents drinking habits and we need to bring that to the fore.

"A lot of people won't smoke in front of their kids and they won't swear - not deliberately - in front of them.

"We need to say 'What do you think being drunk with your mates in front of your kids is doing to your kids?'."

But the Territory's Labor Senator, Trish Crossin, has hit back at the alcohol industry, accusing it of mounting a dangerous campaign to undermine the Federal anti-binge drinking measures.

Ms Crossin says the council's claims about pre-mixed sales are self-serving, and are at odds with figures from the Australian Taxation Office that indicate a drop in sales nationally.

"Binge drinking is actually a community-wide problem and it actually demands a community-wide response.

"What we have here and what we're concerned about is the industry actually running a very misleading campaign against our alco-pop measures, and a campaign that is really more interested in protecting their profits."
